«Xhuyaa Qaagaangaas»: Traduction et retraductions d'un récit haïda

Abstract

The study of the translations of First Nations oral traditions highlights certain issues, including the scientific/literary dichotomy that has hitherto characterised these translations. The thesis illustrates this and other issues through the study of a translation and two retranslations of “Xhuyaa Qaagaangaas,” the ‘Genesis’ of the Haida nation. More precisely, the goal of the thesis is twofold. First, in a bid to understand how and why each translator made his translation choices, to analyse them using the method suggested by Antoine Berman in his essay, Pour une critique des traductions: John Donne. Second, to suggest ways in which future translations might differ from those of the past so as to be more sensitive to cultural differences. The starting hypothesis was that the translation norms of the academic disciplines (anthropology, linguistics and English literature) to which the translators belong, account for most of the observable differences between translations. The subsequent analysis demonstrates that each translator has tended to adjust his target text to ensure it conforms with the norms of his discipline rather than simply reproduce in another language the words by which a First Nations storyteller related an element of his people's tradition.

L’étude des traductions des traditions orales des Premières Nations révèle certaines problématiques, notamment la dichotomie scientifique / littéraire, qui, jusqu’à nos jours, a caractérisé ces traductions. C’est ce que notre travail vise à démontrer en s’appuyant sur l’analyse de la traduction et des retraductions de « Xhuyaa Qaagaangaas », la « genèse » de la nation haïda. Il s’agit, plus exactement, d’analyser ces traductions pour comprendre le comment et le pourquoi des choix de chaque traducteur à partir de la grille que propose Antoine Berman dans son essai Pour une critique des traductions : John Donne, ainsi que pour suggérer comment les traductions de l’avenir pourraient être plus sensibles aux différences culturelles qu’elles le sont actuellement. Nous avons formulé l’hypothèse que les différences observées entre ces traductions peuvent être expliquées en fonction des normes de la discipline universitaire de chacun des traducteurs, dont un anthropologue, un linguiste et un spécialiste en lettres. L’étude qui suit démontre que chaque traducteur a tendance à ajuster son texte d’arrivée afin de le rendre conforme aux attentes de sa discipline plutôt qu’à simplement rendre dans une autre langue les mots avec lesquels le conteur amérindien a relaté un élément de la tradition de son peuple.
