The purpose of this project was to design a truancy prevention and reduction program, identify potential funding sources, and write a grant to fund the program for Altadena Elementary School in Pasadena Unified School District. The proposed program takes a dual approach in addressing truancy; a prevention component offered school-wide and a reduction component offered to a targeted population of 35 students with low attendance rates. The program offers attendance incentives, assemblies for parents and students, attendance monitoring, one-on-one mentoring, group meetings, home visits and referrals. The actual submission and/or funding of the grant were not required for the successful completion of this project. Implications for social work practice are discussed.
