Factors influencing recruitment and retention of nurse educators reported by current nurse faculty

Abstract (Summary)

The American baby boom generation, 75 million strong, will be 65 years old by 2030. This huge population will push up the demand for health care services proportionately, and along with it, the demand for registered nurses. Because of a shortage of nursing faculty, competition for clinical practice sites and inadequate classroom space, nursing programs of all degree levels turned away 169,000 qualified applicants in the 2008-2009 academic year. With the average age of nurse faculty now over 50 and few registered nurses going into academic careers, there will be an acute drop in the nurse faculty workforce over the next 10 to 15 years. It could become impossible for nursing programs to meet the healthcare system's need for registered nurses. Strategies for recruiting and retaining nurse faculty have been outlined, but we do not know which are effective, and no studies have focused on nurse faculty whose primary assignment is teaching. Therefore, the primary goal of this study was to develop a comprehensive list of recruitment and retention strategies with indications of which strategies are most effective for which type of nurse educator.

This descriptive study used an online survey to ask nurse faculty members teaching in associate, baccalaureate, master's and doctoral nursing education programs across the nation what attracted them to careers in academia and what they believe will recruit and retain more nurse faculty.

Over 2,100 nurse educators, from every region of the county and all degree levels, responded. They identified seven strategies and factors that attracted them to become nurse educators, 11 strategies they believed were effective in recruitment and 14 strategies effective in retention. They volunteered hundreds of comments, concerns, ideas and stories about nursing, nursing education and nurse faculty recruitment and retention.
