Dissertation/Thesis Abstract

A school-based prevention and intervention program for pregnant and parenting teens: A grant proposal
by Castaneda, Mirella, M.S.W., California State University, Long Beach, 2011, 73; 1493096
Abstract (Summary)

The purpose of this project was to develop a grant proposal to fund a school-based program for pregnant and parenting adolescents at Cesar Chavez Alternative School, Compton, California. An extensive literature review was conducted to provide information on the continuous increase of adolescent pregnancies in the United States. The literature review covered how teen pregnancy can be related to child maltreatment, repeat pregnancies, and an increase in high school dropout rates. Most importantly, the literature provided information on how school-based prevention and intervention programs could be effective in reducing repeat pregnancies and in better outcomes for school completion. The proposed school-based program will provide pregnant/parenting students with parenting and sex and pregnancy prevention education. Clients will have access to onsite child care and will participate in individual counseling. Actual submission and/or funding of the grant was not required for the successful completion of this project.
