Dissertation/Thesis Abstract

The Bird Is A Word
by Masuyama, Grey, M.F.A., California State University, Long Beach, 2010, 9; 1493037
Abstract (Summary)

My project, THE BIRD IS A WORD, is a visual narrative interpretation of the song, "All Along the Watchtower," written by Bob Dylan, as recorded by Jimi Hendrix. This project simultaneously documents my interpretation of the song, and a search for personal meaning and understanding, in a context of seemingly endless introspection and confusion. In an attempt to visually embody the complexity and contradictions I found in the lyrics, the music, and performance, I have contrasted lighthearted comic exaggeration with the song's overt serious content.

The work of my project consists of 38 graphite drawings on Bristol, ranging in size from 14 inches by 17 inches to 6.25 inches by 3 inches, and one 8.75 inch by 7.75 inch acrylic painting on hardboard.
