Self-reported factors that influence choice of college-bound students in Lebanon

Abstract (Summary)

The number of students entering universities in Lebanon has steadily increased in the past ten years. This trend makes it imperative that the different stakeholders, like students, parents, schools, universities, and education officials, understand what influences the decision of a student to choose a specific college. Understanding these factors will help schools and universities make better decisions in order to better meet the demand of prospective students, and on the other hand, will help prospective students compare themselves with a benchmark of factors in Lebanon. Survey research was the methodology used to conduct this study. More specifically a cross-sectional survey design was used. The study used questionnaires to collect students’ responses, and data was collected in six different regions within Lebanon. The results of this study showed that the seven factors addressed in this study were ranked by the students in order of importance as follows: parents, family income, cost of college, friends, residence location, religion, and gender. Furthermore, this study compared, using t-tests, how demographic data like gender, type of school attended (public or private), and level of parents’ education affected the different factors. These results show that parents, friends, and financial considerations are the main factors affecting student decisions; therefore, universities should target parents more in all their communications and recruiting campaigns since parents are the ones that most influence the student’s decision. On the other hand, universities and officials should also look to venues in order to ease the financial burden put on college-bound students; increased financial aid, loan and grant programs, and scholarships are some good examples that could be used in order to invite students to enroll in specific universities.
