Abstract (Summary)

Universities are realizing that retention needs to be at the forefront of the University's strategic mission because sustainability and future economic viability remain at stake. Retention of college students is a serious issue that needs further study in the area of higher education. Extant literature abounds with methodologies and practices to improve retention among the nation's college students. However, retention remains as one of the fundamental issues in our Universities. The introduction of the millennial student to the University setting further adds to the importance of retention. Known as a generation fueled with the Internet and technology, keeping the millennial student vested in school has proven to be a challenge. Also of importance are increasing numbers of minority and Hispanic students attending college. In many instances, these first generation higher education students come to college underprepared for the rigors of higher learning.
