Dissertation/Thesis Abstract

The inner game of a character: The creation of the role of Tel in “Current Nobody”
by Hall, Jocelyn C., M.F.A., California State University, Long Beach, 2010, 10; 1486334
Abstract (Summary)

This project report examines the mental challenge in creating the role of Tel in Melissa James Gibson's Current Nobody as presented by California Repertory Company in the fall of 2009 at the Queen Mary's Royal Theatre. The focus of the approach is on freeing what Timothy Gallwey calls Self 2 in his book The Inner Game of Tennis.

I intend to show how utilizing Declan Donnelan's book The Actor and the Target quiets what Gallwey calls Self 1 and leads to spontaneity. I will also demonstrate how to create a fully connected and uniquely characterized role by employing techniques from Stanislavski and Michael Chekhov.
