Dissertation/Thesis Abstract

Superstructure
by Shurts, Christina, M.F.A., California State University, Long Beach, 2010, 10; 1486440
Abstract (Summary)

This project consists of a series of large scale paintings which are informed by the concepts of superstructure and the heterotopic. The paintings, cinematic construction, begin with personal and appropriated imagery, combining memory and form into images of wild escapes such as vacation bungalows in a desolate landscape. These vacationlands appear dangerous but a strange humor exists in the odd imagery like gravity defying stilts. Elements, such a sweet and saccharin colors, add a natural reprieve from the serious subject matter.
