The purpose of this project was to develop a proposal for a mentoring program for 4th and 5th grade African American and Latino youth in South Los Angeles, California, to identify potential funding, and complete a grant application to fund the program. View Park Preparatory Accelerated Charter Elementary School was chosen as the school to benefit from this program. This school was chosen based on its demographics, geographic location, and proposed support to the program.
A thorough literature review was conducted. This assisted the grant writer in outlining the need for mentoring, documenting discrepancies between minority and non-minority educational performance, and designing the proposed program. The program focuses on team building, self-identity, and exposure to secondary education by linking them with mentors. After a funding source was identified, the grant was written with the intention of submission to the Joseph Drown Foundation.
