Abstract (Summary)

The purpose of the grant proposal project was to locate a potential funding source and write a grant for the Sports4Kids program to be implemented at 2 elementary schools in Southern California. An in-depth literature review enhanced the knowledge of existing evidence-based programs, that address protective and risk factors of misconduct, current school disciplinary practices, and maladaptive behaviors of children in elementary schools. The Stuart Foundation was selected as a funding source through the Foundation Center database search. The Sports4Kids program teaches conflict resolution skills while enhancing protective factors of school bonding, peer leadership, and social skills of children. The program offers opportunities for healthy and active play, academic success, and a safe learning environment. A grant was then written to support the implementation of this program at Lowell and Santiago Elementary schools in Santa Ana, California. Actual submission and/or funding of this grant was not required for successful completion of this thesis.
