Hold and Be Held is a collection of poetry in which I explore the painful past of my family and also attempt to move beyond it. In the poems and in the Introduction and Methodology sections of this collection I look at the effects of mental illness and a sense of secretiveness on my own life and on the lives of those around me. This collection also explores the idea that poetry is a form of communication between poet and reader. Ultimately, this is a collection of poems that is affected by my past while looking toward a new juncture, both personally, as I am on the verge of getting married, and artistically, as I explore new subjects and ways of communicating authentically with readers.
