The needs of Korean-American and Korean families of children with disabilities

Abstract (Summary)

The purpose of this study was to identify the needs of Korean-American families and Korean families of children with disabilities by determining Korean-American and Korean mothers' perception of family needs related to their children with disabilities aged birth to 18. The conceptual framework of this study rests on family systems theory and ecological theory. Fifty-nine Korean-American mothers and 435 Korean mothers participated in the study.

The results of the study were that (1) Korean-American mothers perceived slightly lower needs than Korean mothers, (2) both Korean-American and Korean mothers reported Information as the highest need and Explaining to Others as the lowest need, (3) there was not a statistically significant difference of family needs overall between Korean-American and Korean mothers, (4) there was no statistically significant difference of sub-categories of family needs between Korean-American and Korean mothers, (5) the significant predictor variables for family needs in Korean-American mothers' characteristics were English Skill and City Size, (6) the significant predictor variables for family needs in Korean mothers' characteristics were Income, Education Level, Helping Person for Household, and Number of Children, (7) the significant predictor variables for family needs in Korean-American children's characteristics were Degree of Disability, Number of Disability, and Education Program, and (8) the significant predictor variables for family needs in Korean children's characteristics were Child Gender, Child Age, Degree of Disability, Main Type of Disability, Education Program, and Years of Service.
