The HR field has been shifting their roles and has been noted as the evolution to be more like a counseling role, making this field a part of a helping profession. There is a need to understand Compassion Fatigue within employees working in HR departments. Research has been limited on if a relationship exists between Emotional Separation, Compassion Fatigue, and Compassion Satisfaction. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine if and to what extent there was a relationship between Compassion Fatigue, consisting of Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress, Compassion Satisfaction and Emotional Separation, among HR professionals in the US. The self-other theory and the compassion satisfaction-compassion fatigue theory provided the theoretical foundation for this study. Four research questions asked if there was a correlation between Emotional Separation and the variables measured in the ProQOL-5 independent of one another. Data were collected for the variables via an online survey using two validated instruments, MESS and ProQOL-5. The study was conducted with a convenience sample of 160 HR professionals in the US. Results of the Pearson correlations revealed a statistically significant negative correlation between Emotional Separation and Compassion Fatigue, (rp = -0.60, p < .001, 95% CI [-0.69, -0.50]), Burnout, (rp = -0.45, p < .001, 95% CI [-0.56, -0.31]), and Secondary Traumatic Stress, (rp = -0.62, p < .001, 95% CI [-0.71, -0.51]), and a statistically significant positive correlation for Compassion Satisfaction (rp = 0.25, p = .001, 95% CI [0.10, 0.39]). These results show further research in HR and the variables is important and relevant and needed to mitigate Compassion Fatigue.
