Dissertation/Thesis Abstract

Barriers in Assessing Alcohol Use Disorder Among Elderly African American Men
by Ray, Carla Denise, D.S.W., Capella University, 2021, 148; 28319818
Abstract (Summary)

This study results lead to strategies and recommendations for a mental health agency to improve guidance, supervision, and training in assessing AUD among elderly African American men. According to the literature, gaps in the literature indicated that little research had been conducted with elderly African American men with AUD due to their lack of participation in the study. The barriers impacting research gaps are elderly African American men's lack of trust, education, income, and insurance. The researcher conducted a participatory action research qualitative methodology to understand better the barriers to assessing elderly African American men with AUD. The three research questions were designed to seek answers to this epidemic. A total of 12 BHCPs from a behavioral health agency in a Southeastern State participated in the study, including primary care physicians, psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, and registered nurses. The organization serves individuals with behavioral issues, addictions, and developmental disabilities. The research findings revealed that BHCPs lack knowledge in assessing elderly African American men with AUD and cultural competency, and ecological factors that impact the elderly African American male population. A developed action plan to help BHCPs eliminate barriers in assessment procedures for elderly African American men with AUD provided to the stakeholders in a narrative report.
