The Impact of Implementing a Response to Intervention Support System for Students in Reading in a Mid-Sized Suburban Middle School

Abstract (Summary)

The current study shares the findings of the impact of implementing a response to intervention support system for students in reading in a mid-sized suburban middle school. The researcher shares what she knows about Response to Intervention (RTI), described as a three-tiered process targeting specific areas where students struggle and applying intensive research-based intervention until the threat to learning is alleviated, reading research, and the District’s RTI system. The current study examined the impact of a RTI system focused on Tier 2 interventions for eighth grade students in the area of reading, and compared the scores of both groups to see if there was a difference in student growth in the area of reading. The researcher used the Istation’s Indicator of Progress (ISIP), the formative assessment tool designed by Istation, which is an internet and web-delivered computer-adaptive system that provides continuous progress monitoring to look at the student results from the beginning, middle, and end of the year, and as well as student’s state assessment scores on State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Reading. The data collected from the current study were used to determine if Tier 2 intervention support was effective in addressing the needs of students in reading. The results of the current study show that the systematic implementation of Tier 2 reading interventions can raise the individual scores of students receiving interventions as measured using the ISIP formative assessment tool in Istation.
