Beyond the Birthday Candles is a collection of short stories about women coming of age. Technically, we are always coming of age. Some of the stories deal with death at early and late age. Others are about sexual awakenings, sexual assault, and body image issues. The smaller pieces divide the more substantial works that also concern familiar, “everyday” troubles. These stories were written in hopes of making women (or anyone going through similar experiences) feel less alone in what they might be facing. Aging is awkward at every stage.
