Best Practices for Veterinary Practice Owners

Abstract (Summary)

There are approximately 26,000 small animal veterinary practices in the United States, excluding large corporations (Downing, 2014). The veterinary industry is challenging, especially as a veterinary practice owner. The competitive environment and standards of quality care for animals have increased the challenges faced by veterinary practice owners. Furthermore, small animal veterinary practice owners are seeing a surge in corporate buyouts, and difficulty leading their teams, while also, practicing good medicine. Amongst the challenges, there are many advantages to being a veterinary practice owner. Veterinarians have stated that at the time of graduation from veterinary school, they have acquired proper skills in animal medicine, yet lack knowledge of leadership, communication, and finance. Most commonly, a veterinarian owns a veterinary practice, although in some states a non-veterinarian (entrepreneur) can own a veterinary practice. Both veterinarian practice owners and non-veterinarian practice owners encounter challenges.

This qualitative study conducted through semi-structured interviews, aimed to get a better understanding of best practices taken by small animal veterinary practice owners in the United States. The study explains certain key terms in the veterinary industry, and the basic foundation to veterinary practice ownership. This study also addresses the importance of leadership and organizational culture in a veterinary practice, and how through effective leadership skills and necessary tools, a veterinary practice owner can lead their teams and operate a successful veterinary practice. Teamwork is necessary for a veterinary practice to succeed, and with a great leader, the veterinary industry can thrive. The results from the interviews are intended to showcase common challenges faced by practice owners (such as employee retention, and communication), and how they overcome their obstacles. The results also illustrate how practice

owners define and measure success, as well as offer recommendations for current or future veterinary practice owners. This study intended to showcase how veterinary practice owners are overcoming challenges, so that veterinary practice owners can succeed. Collectively, the strategies and tools developed in the study will assist veterinary practice owners in leading their teams, and anticipating certain challenges before they arise.
