Objective: This study examined the effectiveness of Check & Connect (C&C) and Behavior Contract intervention on the attendance, behavior (suspensions), and course performance (GPA) outcomes of at-risk youth in an urban high school. Method: In the 2018-2019 school year there were 217 students who were placed on Behavior Contracts. Of the 217 students placed on Behavior Contracts, 74 students were deemed appropriate for the 2019-2020 study due to meeting three early warning indicator criteria (attendance, behavior, course performance). Of the 74 students, 37 were placed in the C&C condition while the other 37 continued with the Behavior Contract. The study ran for one marking period, which equated to about 9 weeks length. Results: An independent samples T-test was conducted to determine if there was a significant difference between the means of the two groups on the three variables (attendance, behavior, course performance). Results suggested there was no statistical significant effect found for attendance, behavior (suspensions), and course performance (GPA). Conclusion: Although the differences within each subgroup was not statistically significant, the study yielded some practical observations that can be used to formulate approaches to addressing the problem of chronic absenteeism and the importance of utilizing a mentoring approach to ameliorate the growing concern surrounding chronic absenteeism within a urban school district.
