This study quality determined differences in total distance (TD), sprint distance (SD), time spent in speed zone 1 (0-1.5m/s), zone 2 (1-3.5m/s), zone 3 (3.5-5m/s), zone 4 (5-7.5m/s), and zone 5 (7.5m/s+), distance per minute (DPM), and player load (PL) performed by collegiate soccer players against higher-quality and lower-quality competition. 26 male soccer players (4 forwards, 13 midfielders, 9 defenders) from the same Division I school were assessed during the 2019 season, with Catapult GPS units were used for measurement. Opponents were separated into top 5 higher-quality and bottom 5 lower-quality teams based on win percentage at the end of the season, which resulted in 10 games being utilized for this study. A 3x2 ANOVA (p < 0.05) and partial eta2 (small effect = 0.01; medium effect = 0.09; large effect = 0.25) calculated differences between the three positions and higher-quality versus lower-quality opponents. Significant differences were found between opponents in TD (p = .015; ŋp2 = .230), PL (p = .022; ŋp2 =.209), and time in zone 1 (p = .035; ŋp2 = 0.65, .253). However, no significance differences between positions was found (p = .206, .486; ŋp2 = .129, .061). No significant differences were found between opponents and position in SD, time in zones 2-5, and DPM (p = .065-.648; ŋp2 = .025-.141). Against better opponents, players had to cover greater running distances during the match and experienced a greater load. Ensuring players are physically prepared for the greater demands could potentially affect the success of collegiate male soccer players through the course of a season.
