Method of loci (MOL) is a mnemonic technique for enhancing memory. MOL functions through use of vivid mental imagery. Images planted in an imagined interior landscape serve as cues. Practitioners of MOL use these images and the landscape as mnemonic scaffolding. The technique benefits encoding and retrieval of to-be-remembered material. This online research project was designed to examine effects of emotional valence and vivid imagery ability on memory. Memory performance was compared among differing memory task conditions that made use of MOL. In one condition, participants used MOL images they had generated within their imagination to assist in their recall. In a second condition, they used a virtual, researcher-generated environment as their MOL scaffolding to help them remember lists of words. These two conditions also varied in emotional valence. Participants were assigned to a positive, neutral, or negative valence. Valence was manipulated through exposure to photographs from the International Affective Picture System. Finally, this interaction was examined as a function of the imagery ability of participants. Participants were categorized as “high” or “low” imagers based on their scores on the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire-2. For free recall and serial recall as well as the difference score, there were no significant main effects. There were no significant two-way, three-way, or four-way effects for imagery ability or valence.
