As organizations try to improve leadership development, thoughts include many areas related to cognition. Cognition is a vital aspect of leader development. Cognition entails reasoning, planning, problem-solving, comprehension of structure, and professional competence. In addition to cognition, emotional awareness in decision making is gaining recognition as an equally important skill for effective leadership. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore how existing leadership training offered to federal government leaders GS-13 and above may be enhanced to address emotional elements of decision making. Data collection consisted of eight semi-structured interviews with federal government leaders. Data analysis consisted of transcribing the raw data using NVivo 12™, to identify four main themes: empathy is not a weakness, it is a strength; self-awareness, turning a negative decision into a positive trait; bias occurs naturally in interpersonal relationships; and emotional awareness is a critical component of decision making. The results of the study may be incorporated into organizational leadership literature with the voices of leaders in real-life, working in high tempo environments. Findings may also be used to inform leadership of the importance of including emotional awareness within leadership training programs and to inform organizational leaders on how to better understand the perspectives of leaders in high tempo environments and its effect on subordinates.
