Abstract (Summary)

Valuables is a creative writing thesis comprised of a methodology-focused essay and a collection of original poems. The content was generated during the two-year period of the Master of Fine Arts for Creative Writing Program at California State University, Long Beach. The prose portion reflects on the questions of why I write, what my personal aesthetic is, which writers and writing styles have influenced me, and what my writing process looks like. The primary focus of this work, though, is the following collection of forty-seven poems. They cover a variety of topics and experiences but consistently heed the question, “What is valuable—what remains—and why?”
