Assessment of Acceptance Factors Impacting Adoption and Use of Business Intelligence and Analytics Systems among Small and Medium-Size US Manufacturing Organizations

Abstract (Summary)

Business intelligence and analytics systems, or BI&A, are technology solutions providing organizations with the ability to integrate, aggregate, analyze, and present information in such a way that it is easily consumable for strategic use for decision-making. BI&A has been shown to provide strategic opportunities to create competitive advantage and increase value and growth through innovation, especially for manufacturers who play a vital role in the US economy. Despite the opportunities that BI&A present for US manufacturing organizations, and significant investments over the last several years, in many cases, the technology implementation did not result in achieving benefits or a return on investment. This research was a quantitative exploration of the socio-organizational and individualistic factors of performance and effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions and how these factors may influence adoption and use of BI&A within US-based SME manufacturing organizations. This study uses the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) as a means to evaluate the social factors influencing user intention and behavior for a population of managers and decision-makers within SME manufacturers. This study found that for these individuals, the variables in question can be used to predict over 76% of BI&A system acceptance and use within small- and medium-size US manufacturing organizations. This information can be used to better support implementation strategies for adoption of BI&A with a goal of more extensive use that will result in a higher return on investment for SME US manufacturers.
