Abstract (Summary)

Underground Wires is a coming of age collection that revolves around different relationships in Valentina’s life. Valentina is an observant and sensitive girl, growing up in Arizona with her older sister, Kala, and their religious parents. Both of the sisters struggle to understand the teachings of their parents, especially when it comes to understanding their sexuality. The stories follow Valentina from elementary school to her mid-twenties. She goes to college in Los Angeles with her sister and they remain close as adults. Throughout the years, Valentina navigates relationships with her sister, friends, lovers, a pseudo mother, and her parents. These stories explore the complexity of desiring intimacy in the context of loss.
