Dissertation/Thesis Abstract

A Future Near You
by Bell, James, M.F.A., California State University, Long Beach, 2018, 148; 10752008
Abstract (Summary)

A Future Near You is a collection of short stories thematically linked by their preoccupation with worlds and technologies real, developing, and imagined. In this collection of speculative fiction, droids, drones, self-driving vehicles, and book-writing algorithms disrupt the lives of people who are unsure whether they should fear innovation or embrace it. Each story attempts to address how these technologies challenge, enhance, or detract from various aspects of our humanity. They investigate the world as we know it and as it might become, a world inevitably shaped by devices and programs that may or may not be created with our best interest in mind. The endings of many stories are, like the future, uncertain.
