The aim of this thesis is to analyze through the El sueño del celta (2010) from Mario Vargas Llosa what it means to be a hero. We analyzed the main character of the novel El sueño del celta, Roger Casement, from a heroic perspective. Casement was categorized as a modern hero since its main characteristic is its contradictory character. In order to prove that Casement was a modern hero, we studied several narrations that represented the heroic and antiheroic characteristics. Also, we examined the ambiguity of the character via written texts and the narration of the novel.
We concluded that Roger Casement belongs to the epic disintegration of the hero proposed by Mikhail Bakhtin. According to Bakhtin, Casement as the hero of a novel was characterized as an unfinished character with multiples nuances. This showed that the literary genres like the epic and the novel can influence in how the heroic characters are formed. In addition, we questioned the traditional hero conceptualization stated by Hugo Francisco Bauzá and by Joaquín M. Aguirre. Both researchers support that the classic hero makes valued judgments. Among them: the ethic motive of its action, the transgression, the illusion, sense of mediation, the courage, the desire of victory, the sense of seeking and the value that others give him.
However, the new heroic stance that El sueño del celta proposes is that the true heroism does not lies in lacking fear but in overcome it. The truth hero is the one that even though is aware of its deficiencies, like fear and weakness it overcomes them and faces the problems. These characteristics allow to present Roger Casement like a hero in comparison to the traditional hero since it shows a contradictory character and approaches the ambiguity of the human condition.
