The research in this thesis investigated the performance of field based green infrastructure (GI) of planter boxes and rain gardens for volume reduction of stormwater in combined sewers. The study was performed in two residential areas of St. Louis, Missouri: a test site where 6 planter boxes and 12 rain gardens were installed; and a control site where no GI was installed. Measured flows in combined sewers and associated rainfalls that were collected during 2014 and 2015 were analyzed. Prior to evaluation of the GI impact on stormwater reduction, the quality of field-collected data was checked and verified, and stormwater flows were separated from the combined flows. The field-measured data were analyzed with two alternative methods: the first method evaluated flows that were collected from identical days between the test and control sites; the second method evaluated all acceptable flows that were collected during the study period. The study found that volume reductions of stormwater between the two methods were comparable to be 62% and 58%, respectively. The GI performance based on data collected for the period of this study were comparable to the performance reported in an earlier study based on data collected from the same site during 2012 to 2013, indicating no major concern in performance deterioration from an extended application of GI. This study also evaluated the effect of rainfall intensity on performance of installed GI for stormwater reduction in combined sewers. The rainfalls ranged from 0 to 1 in/hr. The analysis did not identify a definite pattern of correlation between rainfall intensity and stormwater volume reduction.
