Dissertation/Thesis Abstract

Aboard and Beyond
by Stevens, Susannah, M.A., The George Washington University, 2017, 71; 10283326
Abstract (Summary)

This thesis examines people and places along the MARC commuter train line between Union Station in Washington, D.C., and Penn Station in Baltimore, Maryland. The project, like the route, moves through diverse locations from the suburbs to the ghetto, and attempts to capture a wide range of human experience through interviews and documentary vignettes of life both on and off the train. A short documentary knits together the scattered narratives. The website and installation include an interactive map of photographs taken along the tracks, and the website invites those who live, work or commute along the tracks to submit their own photos to the map. By revealing the depths inherent in seemingly unimportant lives and locations, the project reminds the viewer that there are stories unfolding around us everywhere we go.
