The range of challenges that state universities face today is vast and continuously expanding. These challenges are political, economic, societal and cultural. Higher education leaders are struggling to meet these challenges and compete in a highly competitive environment. Retention of students is one of the important challenges that state universities face today. Retaining students is crucial for universities not only for their financial resources, but also for their reputation. One of the initiatives to address this issue is to make informed decisions is the use of big data analytics. Universities have large datasets available to predict future direction and generate actionable information. An important type of analytics used to improve management processes and to make informed decisions is big data business analytics. State university executive leaders may improve the effectiveness of their decisions by integrating business analytics in the decision-making models.
The purpose of this study was to examine the use of big data business analytics in the decision-making process at the executive leadership level of the selected state universities. This study examined how descriptive, predictive, prescriptive, decisive and basic analytics, and data collection influenced the decision-making process at the executive leadership level of the state universities with higher and lower retention rates. The patterns of executive leadership in the state universities and their relationships to the use of business analytics and student retention were examined.
A survey was circulated to presidents, chancellors, deans, and provosts of these universities. The top 33 percent of these universities based on their retention rate were compared to the bottom 33 percent of universities on the use of business analytics in their decision-making, general leadership behaviors, and their retention rates.
The higher student retention state universities reported greater use of data collection, descriptive and decisive analytics.
