Abstract (Summary)

Locals is a collection of short stories linked thematically by masculinity and predominantly set in the beach community of the South Bay. In this collection flawed men deal with their life situations in self-destructive ways. These stories feature troubled sons, fleeing husbands, cuckolds, burnout surfers, and former tennis stars. Mostly, the protagonists are men consumed with shame. Many of these stories are less concerned with traditional plot as they are with moments of truth for the characters. Endings are clipped or subverted in order to avoid cliché and careful attention is paid to language. My stories hope to continue the conversation of masculinity and American Male Angst.
