Saline Water Flooding – A Case Study

Abstract (Summary)

Water flooding technique is the used of water injection in order to increase oil production. This technique is known as secondary oil recovery. Water flooding is accomplished by voidage replacement where, the injected water will push oil from the pores (Craig et al.1971). In our study will be using saline water flooding to enhance oil recovery. However the quality of the injection is a must for a successful water flooding and avoids scale precipitation. A good knowledge on how, why and where scale is formed in the reservoir while using sea water as an injection fluid is important in oilfield.

This research will use Eclipse 100 to mitigate scale precipitation over the reservoir. The research will focus on the effect of scale on reservoir performance and how the fluid injection rates, the reservoir bottom Hole pressure and well spacing affect scale precipitation. It was observed that scale usually forms around the producing well when sea water and formation water has been produced. High amount of scale deposition was observed when sea water injection rate increases due to its high amount of seawater fraction. Also scale precipitation is inversely proportional to the reservoir bottomhole pressure. Well spacing has also a great effect on scale deposition, the closer the producing well is to the injection the greater is the amount of scale deposited. Scale deposition has less impact on oil production due to the small percent pore volume it occupies in the reservoir. The effectiveness of water flooding in increasing oil recovery has also been observed as oil recovery increases by 27.9%.
