The M-8 Sand water-flood oil reservoir in the Ship Shoal Offshore Block 93 area in the Gulf of Mexico has two current wells producing oil and gas. In the future, attic well locations will be proposed and drilled for further oil recoveries. However, the stratigraphy of the M-8 Sand was not fully understood and required additional detailed analysis. This study was chosen because of the many different variables in the study area. The primary issue concerned the sand distribution, connectivity, and attic reserve determination. Additionally, the sealing nature of faults and sand juxtaposition further complicate reservoir mapping. It was decided to conduct the project using uninterrupted, clean logs, and correlating the entire well section from shallow to deep. Using these new correlations and incorporating the 3D seismic survey interpretation, along with these sand top picks, new structural maps, fault plane maps, stratigraphic/structural cross-sections, and various sand maps were generated. In order to test new interpretation accuracy, volumetric measurements will be analyzed and compared to current production. In this paper, the methods used to analyze the study area are described. The results of the study are discussed and explained. At the end of the study, a better understanding of the sand depositional model, structure, stratigraphy, and distribution has resulted.
