Realization, assessment and solution for ad hoc on-demand distance vector routing protocol under blackhole attack

Abstract (Summary)

Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET), is a cluster of independent mobile nodes interacting wirelessly. These nodes do not require any existing infrastructure or any kind of centralized unit to control them. MANET has an active topology which means that, any node connect or disconnect from the network at any moment of time without affecting the overall working of the network. Due to these characteristics such as, being an open medium, having an active topology, dispersed operations and controlled capabilities it is often vulnerable to attack.

In this project we will be simulating a scenario of a wireless network with malicious node help in Network Simulator 2 (NS-2) software. Blackhole attack is one of the most wide spread attack which deteriorates considerably the performance of AODV (Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance) vector routing protocol. A potential solution to avoid this attack will be introduced by Reliable AODV (R-AODV). The simulation results will clearly show how the packets get dropped from the blackhole node instead of reaching the destination node. Further the performance of the proposed potential R-AODV will be compared to normal AODV under blackhole attack.
