Making middle school successful: Skills for foster parents and kin a grant proposal

Abstract (Summary)

Starting middle school is often challenging for children because of the significant differences between 5th grade at an elementary school and 6th grade at a new school. Children living with foster parents or kinship caregivers often have extra complications because of previous trauma. Project Inspire aims to empower and educate foster parents and kinship caregivers to help children in their care make middle school successful. Offered in Spanish-English meeting cycles in three sites across Los Angeles County, the program emphasizes the importance of caregiver active involvement in children's academic lives. It emphasizes skills that will help them create healthy relationships with all adults significant to children, including school staff. Activities, time lines, staffing and a feedback form are provided. A potential funder was identified, although actual funding and submission of this grant proposal were not requirements for the successful completion of this project.
