by Cervantes-Alvarez, Martha, M.S.W., California State University, Long Beach, 2015, 75; 1586494
Abstract (Summary)

The purpose of this thesis project was to write a grant proposal to secure funding for a culturally competent, psycho-educational support program for at-risk Latino students and their parents at YO Watts in Los Angeles, California. A literature review was conducted to examine topics related to community violence, as well as the unique experience of Latino youth and their families affected by community violence and other stressors. The purpose of the proposed program was to strengthen support systems of Latino youth who have been exposed to community violence and are struggling with mental health problems, increase their knowledge about mental health issues, identify their strengths, inform them about community resources, and increase their coping skills. The grant was written to the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation. The actual submission or funding of this grant proposal was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.
