Nursing Student Stress Reduction Intervention in the Clinical Setting

Abstract (Summary)

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine if the use of deep diaphragmatic breathing and progressive muscle relaxation as stress reduction techniques prior to the clinical day reduced stress and anxiety felt by nursing students within the clinical setting. Design: A pilot study involving a convenience sample (N=44) of pre-licensure nursing students in their initial clinical course was conducted. Method: Participants in the intervention group were provided ten minutes of time during the first seven weeks of the semester to perform stress reduction interventions during the pre-conference period in the clinical setting. Students in the comparison group discussed the goals of the day. Pre and post surveys of the Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Brief Inventory of Perceived Stress Scale along with another post questionnaire that aimed to determine overall feelings about the intervention were completed by the students. Results: Statistical significance was not shown for the reduction of stress by these interventions. Information was gained regarding the students' feelings on the use of these interventions and the overall feelings of stress. Conclusion: Stress and anxiety of nursing students is a major concern and further research is needed to determine how best to address these concerns.
