Dissertation/Thesis Abstract

An examination of John Musto's Improvisation and Fugue for piano
by Shin, Yoon Young (Anne), M.M., California State University, Long Beach, 2014, 27; 1570857
Abstract (Summary)

John Musto is most widely known for his works for the voice, but an exception was made when he composed the Improvisation and Fugue for piano. With a limited number of performers having played this piece, and with only one commercial recording available as of this writing, a rare find within Musto's catalog of works has equally become a rarity in recordings.

This author seeks to contribute to filling this void of information by examining Musto's musical influences, and investigating his compositional signature, style, and technique in this piano solo work through which he has established himself to be amongst today's leading composers. In addition, this project report will provide a brief interpretive performance guide to assist any pianist interested in learning this work and expanding his/her understanding of John Musto's Improvisation and Fugue. Finally, an appendix will provide my recording of Musto's work from my Graduate Recital program.
