by Welty, Jonathan M., M.S., Western Illinois University, 2014, 68; 1564056
Abstract (Summary)

Coaching styles in NCAA Division III Track & Field vary from institution to institution. There is no one uniform coaching method that has been proven to create greater success than any other. The goal of this investigative study was to analyze the trends in three coaching models utilized in NCAA Division III Track & Field. The study graded and assessed 7 coaches from three NCAA Division III Conferences. Coaches first selected their preferred coaching model and were graded on their model selection via 9 -point likcert scale; then coaches' success rates were assessed through a series of statistically linked questions pertaining to athletic and academic performances. Descriptive statistics were run to find to means, standard deviations, and ranges for all appropriate data and analyzed to study the trends in coaching models. While the study is investigative in nature, trends were found in coaching model analysis. It was found that coaches with more years of experience are more likely to understand and know which model they are using compared to their less experience counterparts. It was also shown that one coaching model, the Relationship Model, had a trend of more athletic success than the other models that were utilized.
