Conversions combines the first four chapters of a novel with a thematically paralleled sequence of stories. The novel portion introduces the characters of Judy, Walt and Carino, all of whom appear in the stories. The novel follows Judy from the east coast to California in response to her brother Walt's debilitating motorcycle accident. In conjunction with the stories, the novel explores and illuminates Judy's relationship with a number of characters, most centrally, Carino, a Vietnam veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, in a world where renegade bikers hell-bent for leather run head on into Christianity.
