The purpose of this thesis was to develop an in-home comprehensive mental health program, the Caregiver Wellness Program, to enhance the well-being of grandparent and relative caregivers of children whose parents are unable to care for them. The funding source identified for the Caregiver Wellness Program was the Weingart Foundation. The Wellness Program was designed to expand on services that Grandparents As Parents provides to grandparent and relative caregivers in Los Angeles County. A thorough literature review was conducted to define the problems and needs of these caregivers as they attempt to safeguard the children under their care. The literature review guided development of a program to address these caregivers' mental health and resource needs (e.g., transportation, child care, and health issues), as well as parenting issues associated with the responsibility of caring for a child again and unexpectedly.
