My thesis show is a series of paintings, drawings, and prints dealing with how the self encounters and engages the present through reflecting on and identifying with the past. My work in Being Here draws on amateur photography from the early part of the twentieth century to inspire an investigation into the relationship that people and places long since past have with us today. I present the viewer with paintings that are my responses to these photographs, provoking a psychology and experience that is intimate and idiosyncratic. The personal impressions from these images are enacted through the painting or drawing process to reveal the poetic and private reflection on moments that intersect the grave with the beautiful, death with life. In essence, my investigation is a contemplation on time and on the ephemerality of existence.
