A Journey to the Grave
by Bennett, Kimberly M., M.F.A., Northern Arizona University, 2013, 112; 1537749
Abstract (Summary)

It was unexpected when Johnny proposed to Alice, especially since he was already dead. Alice, the highborn girl with a touch of tragedy is supposed to die so she can marry Johnny, much to the delight of her stepparents. But, when Death does not come to claim Alice, her stepparents send her off to find out why. Traveling England alone without even a carriage, Alice runs into Doyle, a lower-class wanderer who is equal parts sarcasm and earnest compassion. When they help each other during a terrible storm, the two strike up a tenuous friendship. Alice, unhappy about her situation, keeps the reasons for her journey a secret from Doyle. But Doyle is keeping a few secrets of his own. Deadly secrets. As those secrets are revealed, the two have to trust each other if they want to survive and escape the destiny that has been chasing them.
