by Combs, Brenda R., Ed.D., Grand Canyon University, 2012, 156; 3548739
Abstract (Summary)

Homelessness is an epidemic that is increasing at an alarming rate, especially among women. Homelessness combined with other factors has lowered the quality of life for many generations of women, profoundly affecting society and communities throughout the United States. This dissertation investigates the factors and strategies that enabled women to overcome issues that relate to homelessness and return to society as productive citizens. The means for their transition back into society was explored through a survey of 11 formerly homeless women and interviews with six formerly homeless women in Phoenix, Arizona. Based on survey data, study results suggest that six factors enabled the participants to overcome homelessness. The strategies were identified within the factors during the face-to-face semi structured interviews. From these identified factors and strategies, four themes emerged: (a) obtained support, (b) development of self-confidence, (c) created a structured daily routine, and (d) ability to love oneself. The factors and strategies identified as helping these women overcome homelessness may possibly become the basis for future interventions. Organizations and leaders can use this comprehensive holistic framework to enable women who are currently experiencing homelessness to overcome their struggles and transition back into society. This framework will also provide a new mental model to use for future research studies. Keywords: homelessness, women
