The focus of the paper is to analyze Ernst von Dohnanyi's Passacaglia for solo flute. An analysis of each of the 18 variations will be provided; it will look at chordal structures as well as how he structures the variations and incorporates the 12 tone melody in the beginning. Each variation will be listed in detail with regard to melody, rhythm, and momentum of the piece. A historical background of Dohnanyi, the passacaglia and the piece itself will be included. After analyzing the piece, examples will be given to aid the performance.
