The quality and safety of nursing practice are major concerns in nursing educational and clinical practice settings (Bartels & Bednash, 2005; Ironside, 2008). This research study adds to the growing body of evidence on nursing competency and safe nursing practice. The purpose of the mixed method study used both descriptive quantitative and grounded theory qualitative methods was to test the theory that nursing competence has an impact on the quality of nursing care and the safety of nursing practice in the multicultural healthcare environment in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The descriptive quantitative study aimed to determine the competency levels of knowledge, skills, and attitudes of 250 participant nurses using six selected nursing core competencies. The grounded theory qualitative study explored if a structured nursing competency program has the potential to help Nurse Educators and Managers assess, maintain, monitor, and improve nursing competence in delivering high quality nursing care and ensuring safe nursing practice. The finding results of this mixed method study have proven the effectiveness of the Ministry of Health (MOH) Nursing Competency Program as an evidenced-based practice in determining the competency levels of knowledge, skills, and attitudes and has the potential to assess, maintain, monitor, and improve the nursing competence. By answering research questions and testing predetermined hypotheses, the research study has been able to validate the potential of a hospital based competency program to influence the quality of nursing care and the safety of nursing practice in the selected population in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
