Saint Iris: Part One is the first section of a proposed three part novel and represents the culmination of the two years I've spent as a graduate student in the Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program at California State University, Long Beach. Saint Iris is the story of an eleven year old girl named Iris Mooney living in a fictional county somewhere in rural Virginia. Part One introduces Iris as she struggles to navigate an unstable home life, fostered by her alcoholic mother and her boyfriend Jim, and a growing sense of isolation. She seeks solace in a group of Charismatics and their enigmatic leader Deacon Brown. All the while, Iris's next door neighbor Rory Thompson watches on with a growing sense of concern and subtle awareness of his inability to stop the car crash he sees unfolding before him.
