by Bailey, Kendra Rae, M.S.W., California State University, Long Beach, 2012, 85; 1517578
Abstract (Summary)

This policy analysis reviews and evaluates the Lanternan-Petris-Short Act (LPS), California's current commitment law establishing guidelines for the involuntary commitment of mentally ill individuals to mental institutions. The analysis presents issues surrounding the process for, and effectiveness of, involuntary commitment; its application amongst various vulnerable and oppressed groups; and its ramifications from a systems perspective. The analysis of the policy also discussed the sociocultural and political environment which influenced its implementation; limitations of the current law; and implications for social work practice, advocacy and future research.
