The nursing bedside change-of-shift report is a tool that helps nurses to gather relevant information regarding the patient in an organized manner. It helps nurses get a good head start on patients whom they will be caring for and on other tasks performed in continuity of care.
A survey was conducted on 37 nurses working day and night shifts in a labor and delivery unit in a Los Angeles acute care hospital regarding the effectiveness of the bedside change-of-shift report. The nurses agreed that the report tool was helpful in their practice in keeping them adequately informed about patient status.
The nursing bedside change-of-shift report tool faces some challenges in implementation due to confidentiality or interrupting a patient's sleep. However, the benefits of making nurses more prepared in facing their responsibility regarding caring for a patient has put more impact on nursing practice.
