How Baby-Boomer experienced leaders use intuition in decision making

Abstract (Summary)

With a growing acceptance of the use of intuition in decision making and an aging workforce led by experienced aging leaders at a time in human history during which rapid change requires swift decisions, it becomes extremely important to better understand how aging experienced leaders use intuitive decision making. Twenty experienced aging leaders from 20 different organizations in the United States were interviewed. Eighteen leaders were Baby Boomers, one was from Generation X, and one was from the Traditionalist Generation. The sample group was selected using a purposive sampling technique. The data were gathered using a face-to-face interview approach. The interviews were semi-structured and utilized a survey questionnaire. Of the 20 experienced aging leaders in this study, 19 of them reported using intuitive decision making to varying degrees. While the majority of aging experienced leaders did not use intuition more as they aged eight leaders said their intuitive decisions had improved because of the experience they had gained with age. All of the leaders indicated they used at least one strategy for improving their use of intuitive decision making. Six leaders discussed tactics they used to "buy time" so they did not have to make decisions quickly. Only one leader indicated he believed intuitive decision making should be totally avoided. The other 19 varied in their opinions about the value and validity of intuitive decision making. Overall, there was a lack of knowledge concerning the research surrounding intuitive decision making as well as a lack for training for aging experienced leaders to assist them in improving intuitive decision making. The results suggested an opportunity to provide aging experienced leaders with accurate information and balanced training on intuitive decision making. Based on the study findings and the literature, recommendations are provided concerning proposed curriculum content.
